Came across this article today on CNN. 7 Common Mistakes to Avoid When Hiring Pros. I couldn’t agree more with most of these 7 mistakes when it comes to hiring a roofing contractor as well. Here’s a breakdown.
1. Poor Communication – We hear it over and over. “You guys are so professional” and “We hired you because we liked your presentation” and ” You guys did a great job communicating exactly what to expect.” “Thank you for listening…” It’s wonderful that customer really feel comfortable with us and that nothing ever comes as a bad surprise.
2. Waiting Until You Need a Contractor – Why wait till your roof deteriorates or leaks before calling a roofing contractor? Most homeowners don’t realize that waiting is a more EXPENSIVE route to take. Usually more extensive damages occur and cost becomes higher. Calling a roofing contractor before leaks or severe wear and tear is always more cost effective.
3. NOT Hiring a Home Improvement Contractor – In other words, doing it yourself! Please avoid this! A small project can turn into a monster. It’s always best to hire a pro.
4. Hiring Someone Who Shows Up at Your Front Door – Beware of these people. They could turn out to be scammers!
5. Hiring Someone to Fix a Problem Without Diagnosing It – Expect a full examination of the problem -No patchworks that will only cover up the main problem. Likewise, be careful of those that sell you more than you really need.
6. Being Enticed by Low/High Bids – Compare quotes and see if the lower bidder is providing the same quality of materials, service and warranties. Compare apples to apples. Not apples to oranges!
7. Not Looking Far Enough – This one, I can’t agree with. A locally established company is better. There are more local customer to see more work samples and get references from. If there is a problem, the work can be fixed more rapidly. And, most importantly, it’s important to support local businesses 🙂
